Thyroid disorders are very common in women particularly after having children. It causes a constellation of symptoms which means it often missed.
If you have 2 or more of these symptoms, you should have your thyroid function checked.
Commonly, only TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) is tested in regular blood screening through your doctor. Whilst this is useful for advanced clinical low thyroid function, it often misses the early stages or subclinical low thyroid function.
To truly assess thyroid function, it must include T4 and T3 as well as thyroid antibodies.
T4 is the hormone made by the thyroid that then gets converted into the active T3. Every cell in the body is impacted by low T3 which is why there are so many variations in clinic symptoms.
Thyroids antibodies are used to determine whether the thyroid function is low due to an autoimmune condition. Not only are thyroid conditions more common in women, but all autoimmune diseases are; and they are on the rise globally.
