Pregnancy creates many physiological and structural changes within a woman’s body. It is a very special time in her life and massage can be very beneficial to the health and wellbeing of not only Mum but baby as well.
Pregnancy Massage aims to be a very positive and nurturing experience, helping to relieve aches and pains whilst aiding to reduce any anxiety that the expectant mum may be experiencing.
Pregnancy Massage aims to relieve;
During Pregnancy many body systems are changing to accommodate your growing baby. Understanding these changes enables the massage therapist to support you throughout your pregnancy whilst understanding any limitations or contraindications and referring on when required.
There are a number of hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy, the production of Relaxin is one such change. This hormone affects the ligaments, increasing their flexibility especially the pubic symphysis and ligaments of the sacroiliac and sacro-coccygeal joints. This is the body preparing for birth.
Weight gain during pregnancy causes a change to your centre of gravity putting more stress on the abdominal muscles, lumbar spine and the sacroiliac joint. Other muscles put under stress during pregnancy are the pectorals, quadratus lumborum (lower back), erector spinae and iliopsoas muscles.
All of these changes occurring during pregnancy put an enormous amount of stress and pressure on a woman’s body and massage can really help to relieve some of the muscular aches and pains associated with these changes. This includes cramps, tightness and tension, headaches, oedema and sore, swollen ankles and feet. Massage can also help increase blood circulation, aiding to provide oxygen and nutrients to your baby. As well as helping to reduce stress and anxiety.
Your experienced massage therapist can help support you from the beginning of your pregnancy right through until after your baby is born.
