What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been practiced for thousands of years. Acupuncture can successfully treat a number of conditions with little side effects, and is now becoming the treatment of choice for a growing number of Australians. Acupuncture has been thoroughly researched globally with extensive evidence based results.

Acupuncture provides:

  • drug-free pain relief
  • effectively treats a wide range of acute and chronic ailments
  • treats the underlying cause of disease and illness as well as the symptoms
  • provides an holistic approach to the treatment of disease and illness, linking body, mind and emotions
  • assists in the prevention against disease and illness as well as the maintenance of general well-being

What does Acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture improves the body’s functions and promotes the natural self-healing process by stimulating specific anatomic sites – commonly referred to as acupuncture points, or acupoints. The most common method used to stimulate acupoints is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the skin.

Modern research has demonstrated acupuncture’s effects on the nervous system, endocrine and immune systems, cardiovascular system, and digestive system. By stimulating the body’s various systems, acupuncture can help to resolve pain, and improve sleep, digestive function, and sense of well-being. Hundreds of clinical studies on the benefits of acupuncture show that it successfully treats conditions ranging from musculoskeletal problems (back pain, neck pain, and others) to nausea, migraine headache, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and infertility.

Common Conditions

Common conditions that are treated by acupuncture here at ReMed are:

  • Neck pain and headaches/migraines
  • Sinusitis, allergies and hayfever
  • Pain management (lower back, plantar fascitis, sciatica, arthritis, carpal tunnel)
  • Insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • Oncology care: to assist in reduction of nausea and discomfort as well as improve energy levels, recovery and sleep)
  • Pregnancy, infertility and conception

What to expect in an initial acupuncture consultation

First, our acupuncturist will ask all about your health history. Any recent medical tests such as x-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, recent blood test results and reports from your GP and/or specialists are very helpful to gain a comprehensive medical history and determine an appropriate treatment plan.  Then, your tongue’s shape, color and coating will be examined, along with your pulse, and possibly perform some additional physical examinations depending on your individual health needs.
Using these unique assessment tools, our acupuncturist will be able to recommend a proper treatment plan to address your particular condition. To begin the acupuncture treatment, you lay comfortably on a treatment table while precise acupoints are stimulated on various areas of your body. Cupping, Gua Sha or Tuina (traditional Chinese Massage) may also be included.
Most people feel no or minimal discomfort as the fine needles are gently placed. The needles are usually retained between five and 30 minutes. During and after treatments, people report that they feel very relaxed.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

Treatment strategies vary, however it is recommended to book four consecutive treatments. Acupuncture is very effective for treating a number of conditions and you will be advised at your inital treatment based on your specific condition. Our goal is to minimise follow-up appointments and empower our patients, educate and enable them to take responsibility for their own health as best they can outside treatments.

Can I claim on my private health cover?

Acupuncture is covered under all private health funds and claims can be made on HICAPS at reception.
